What is a calligram?

A calligram is a poem whose words are arranged to draw its subject. Guillaume Apollinaire gave the genre its name with his collection Calligrammes (1918): here, the verses fall in thin diagonals, and the poem literally rains down the page.

What does Apollinaire's Il Pleut tell us?

In this poem, the rain becomes voices: those of beloved women, of past encounters, of cities passed through. Each line falls like a trail of drops, and the final verse invites you to listen to the falling of "the bonds that hold you above and below". It is one of Apollinaire's most famous calligrams, both melancholy and utterly modern.
