The standout piece
Victor Hugo had another, hidden talent
We know Victor Hugo the novelist, poet, playwright and statesman. We know far less of Victor Hugo the artist. Throughout his life he made hundreds of drawings in ink, wash and charcoal.
In 1866, while writing The Man Who Laughs, he drew the Eddystone Lighthouse, a lone tower standing in the middle of the sea and the storm. The original is kept at the Maison de Victor Hugo in Paris.
A piece that tells a story before you even know it.
