Heart Crown and Mirror, Tomorrow, at Dawn and In Search of Lost Time: a set of three literary prints, 20x28 in (50x70 cm), three great texts of French literature in the original French. An Apollinaire calligram, a Victor Hugo poem and Proust's famous madeleine page, for a whole wall of words.

Three texts, three ways of writing

On the left, Cœur couronne et miroir (Calligrammes, 1918): Apollinaire draws with letters, and the words "My heart like an upside-down flame" form a heart in black ink. In the center, Demain, dès l'aube (Les Contemplations, 1856): Victor Hugo's three stanzas, centered on a cream background under an italic title. On the right, page 63 of À la recherche du temps perdu: the madeleine passage, Proust's most famous page, set like a book page on softly pink paper.

A drawn poem, a poem in verse, a page of prose: three ways of writing about memory and the heart. All three prints leave plenty of white space around the text, which is what makes them work together on a wall.

How much wall space does a 20x28 triptych need?

Three 20-inch-wide prints hung 2 to 3 inches apart cover about 5.5 feet of wall: the width of a sofa, a headboard or a low bookcase. At 20x28, the text reads from across the room.

Who did Victor Hugo write Tomorrow, at Dawn for?

For his daughter Léopoldine, who drowned in 1843. The poem follows the father's walk to her grave, where he lays "a bouquet of green holly and flowering heather".

Is the triptych framed?

No: the three prints ship unframed, rolled and protected. 20x28 in (50x70 cm) is a standard size found in most frame shops.

A gift for book lovers

For a reader, a literature teacher, a retirement or Christmas: three of the most loved texts in the French language, on your wall.

Beautiful words deserve beautiful paper

These verses are set to be hung: a chosen typeface, measured margins, white space worked around the text. It is this layout that makes you want to read them again.

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. You read it the way you read a book.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a poem is not the same as reading it once. The text stays there, you catch two lines in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.

There is a quiet pleasure in living with French literature in the original. The poem keeps the language it was written in, and with it the sound the writer chose, which no translation quite carries over. On an English-speaking wall it stops being decoration and becomes something with a little cachet: a piece of France you can read on your way past, every morning.
