A stone lighthouse rising out of a storm, in brown ink and wash, signed "Victor Hugo 1866".

Did Victor Hugo draw?

Yes, a great deal. The author of Les Misérables left thousands of drawings in ink, pen and brush, often made for himself alone. The Eddystone Lighthouse is one of the most famous. The original, 89.5 x 47.7 cm (about 35 x 19 in), is kept at the Maison de Victor Hugo in Paris.

What does The Eddystone Lighthouse show?

The Eddystone lighthouse, off Plymouth, as it stood in the 18th century: a baroque tower covered with balconies, cranes and flags. Hugo drew it in 1866 while working on his novel The Man Who Laughs, after an engraving in Beeverell's book Les Délices de la Grande-Bretagne et de l'Irlande. In the novel the lighthouse only appears in a digression about shipwrecks; on paper it became one of his greatest drawings.

Where should you hang it?

Its sepia tones suit wood, linen, white walls and wall panelling. Above a desk, in a library, in an entryway: it is the piece that makes guests ask "who drew that?". It is also a gift for anyone who loves Victor Hugo, the sea or lighthouses.

Beautiful words deserve beautiful paper

These verses are set to be hung: a chosen typeface, measured margins, white space worked around the text. It is this layout that makes you want to read them again.

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. You read it the way you read a book.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a poem is not the same as reading it once. The text stays there, you catch two lines in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.

There is a quiet pleasure in living with French literature in the original. The poem keeps the language it was written in, and with it the sound the writer chose, which no translation quite carries over. On an English-speaking wall it stops being decoration and becomes something with a little cachet: a piece of France you can read on your way past, every morning.
