“Tomorrow, at dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens, I will depart.”

Context of the work

Victor Hugo wrote this poem in 1847, on the anniversary of the death of his daughter Léopoldine, who drowned in 1843 at the age of nineteen. Published in Les Contemplations in 1856, it only reveals its true destination - a tomb - in the very last line, after three stanzas that initially give the illusion of a simple journey towards a loved one.

Who is Victor Hugo's "Demain, dès l'aube" about?

The poem is addressed to Léopoldine, Victor Hugo's daughter, who drowned in 1843. Written on the anniversary of her death, it only reveals in the last line that it is a pilgrimage to her grave, and not a simple journey.

Which format should I choose for this "Demain, dès l'aube..." poster?

Beautiful words deserve beautiful paper

These verses are set to be hung: a chosen typeface, measured margins, white space worked around the text. The paper, an uncoated matte 170 gsm, stays slightly fibrous: it reads like the page of a book.

There is a quiet pleasure in living with French literature in the original. The poem keeps the language it was written in, and with it the sound the writer chose, which no translation quite carries over. On an English-speaking wall it stops being decoration and becomes something with a little cachet: a piece of France you can read on your way past, every morning. It earns the large format. At 50x70 cm the text is read from across the room, and the page holds a wall the way a painting does.
