Context of the work

Victor Hugo wrote this poem in 1847, on the anniversary of the death of his daughter Léopoldine, who drowned in 1843 at the age of nineteen. Published in Les Contemplations in 1856, it only reveals its true destination - a tomb - in the very last line, after three stanzas that initially give the illusion of a simple journey towards a loved one.
