"A narrow alley in Okayama glistens under a fine rain, a walker with a yellow umbrella walks away towards a wooden bell tower that dominates the rooftops."

Context of the work

This 1947 print is signed by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), undisputed master of shin-hanga and specialist in rain and night scenes, published by the editor Watanabe Shōzaburō, a founding figure of this movement.

What did Kawase Hasui particularly excel at?

Hasui (1883-1957) excelled at capturing the atmosphere of a precise moment: the wetness of the cobblestones, the silence of a street in the rain - a skill that made him the undisputed master of shin-hanga rain and night scenes.

What size should I choose for this reproduction?

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. Colors keep their depth, as on the page of a book.
