History of the artwork

Sandro Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus around 1485, probably for the Medici family. The goddess approaches the shore standing on a conch, pushed by Zephyr, while one of the Hours comes forward to cover her with a floral cloak.

It is one of the first major Renaissance canvases to depict a female nude on a non-religious subject. Botticelli painted on canvas and not on wood, with a lightened tempera that gives the whole its pale transparency. The work is kept in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
