History of the Artwork
Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss between 1907 and 1908, at the height of his "Golden Phase." The couple kneels at the edge of a flower bed, enveloped in a single garment, yet the patterns separate: black and white rectangles for him, colored circles for her.
Klimt applied real gold leaf, a technique inherited from his goldsmith father and the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna he had seen in 1903. The work is housed at the Belvedere in Vienna, which purchased it even before its completion.

Gustav Klimt used real gold leaf in The Kiss, painted between 1907 and 1908. This technique comes from his training with his goldsmith father and his trip to Ravenna in 1903, where he discovered Byzantine mosaics. The painting is housed at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna.
