Story of the artwork

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889, from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The village in the foreground does not exist in the real landscape: the painter added it from memory, with a church spire reminiscent of those in his native Holland.

The spiraling sky, the cypress rising like a flame, and the crescent moon compose a vision more internal than documentary. Preserved at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941, it has become one of the most reproduced images in the world.
