History of the artwork

Katsushika Hokusai created The Great Wave off Kanagawa around 1831, as the opening piece of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The print shows three fishing boats caught under a wave whose foam closes like claws, while Fuji, in the distance, remains perfectly calm.

Prussian blue, a pigment imported from Europe and still new to Japan, gives the image its characteristic depth. Distributed in Europe after Japan's opening, it fascinated Monet, Van Gogh, and Debussy, who placed it on the cover of La Mer.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa, engraved by Katsushika Hokusai around 1831, shows three fishing boats surprised by an immense wave, with Mount Fuji motionless in the background. It is the first print in the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and the most reproduced Japanese image in the world.
