Story of the artwork

Henri Rousseau, known as Le Douanier Rousseau (1844-1910), is one of the most important naive painters in art history. Without ever having left France, he imagined tropical jungles of extraordinary density and poetry. The Equatorial Forest, painted around 1909, depicts a tangle of exotic vegetation - giant leaves, lianas, improbable flowers - in an intense, deep green. Picasso admired Rousseau, and the Surrealists would celebrate him as a precursor.

Did Henri Rousseau really visit a tropical jungle?

No: Le Douanier Rousseau (1844-1910) never left France. He entirely imagined his tropical jungles, including The Equatorial Forest (circa 1909), which did not prevent Picasso from admiring him and the Surrealists from celebrating him as a precursor.
