History of the work

Claude Monet dedicated the last thirty years of his life to his Giverny pond. From 1897, he painted nearly two hundred and fifty canvases of water lilies, gradually eliminating the bank and the horizon line: only the surface of the water remained, with the sky reflected in it and the flowers floating there.

This disappearance of reference points makes the series one of the thresholds towards 20th-century abstraction. The large panels offered to the French state are installed in two oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie, in Paris, arranged as desired by the painter.

How many Water Lilies did Monet paint?

Claude Monet painted approximately two hundred and fifty water lily canvases between 1897 and his death in 1926, all inspired by the pond in his garden in Giverny. The large panels he offered to the French state are exhibited in two oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie, in Paris.
