History of the artwork

The Japanese Bridge is one of the icons of Impressionist painting. Monet painted the small arched bridge in his Giverny garden many times from 1899 onwards. This version captures the garden's lushness at its peak: wisteria cascades over the bridge, water lilies carpet the water, and green dominates in all its variations. The influence of Japanese prints is evident in the refined composition and the reflections in the water. Housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
