History of the Artwork
Monet's views of the Houses of Parliament are among his most captivating series. Painted during his stays in London between 1899 and 1904, they depict the Gothic edifice dissolving into the Thames' mist under changing light. This 1904 version is bathed in almost surreal oranges, pinks, and twilight purples. The silhouette of Parliament barely emerges from the fog, transforming the architecture into pure chromatic sensation. Housed at the National Gallery of Art.
