History of the Artwork

Claude Monet's views of the Houses of Parliament in London are among his most captivating series. Painted during his stays in London between 1899 and 1904, they show the Gothic edifice dissolving into the Thames mist under changing light. This 1904 version is bathed in twilight oranges, pinks, and violets of an almost unreal intensity. The silhouette of Parliament barely emerges from the fog, transforming the architecture into pure chromatic sensation. Housed at the National Gallery of Art.
