History of the artwork

Claude Monet painted the cliffs of Étretat numerous times between 1883 and 1886. Fascinated by the natural forms sculpted by erosion – the Porte d'Aval, the Aiguille – he immortalized them under all light conditions. This 1885 version captures the tranquil power of the Norman coast, with turquoise waters and a cliff plunging into the sea. A work of wild and soothing beauty.
