History of the artwork

Claude Monet painted the cliffs of Etretat many times between 1883 and 1886. Fascinated by the natural forms sculpted by erosion - the Porte d'Aval, the Aiguille - he immortalized them under all lighting conditions. This 1885 version captures the tranquil power of the Normandy coast, with turquoise waters and a cliff plunging into the sea. A work of wild and soothing beauty.

Monet was fascinated by the forms sculpted by erosion on this Normandy coast - the Porte d'Aval, the Aiguille - and painted them many times between 1883 and 1886 to capture their variations in light.
