History of the Artwork
Waterloo Bridge is part of Claude Monet's famous London series, created during his stays at the Savoy Hotel in 1899-1901 and reworked in Giverny until 1904. Monet painted this bridge in all atmospheric conditions: morning mist, sunset, rain. This 1903 version is bathed in unique atmospheric blues, purples, and grays, where the bridge and barges seem to float in the steam of the Thames. It is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
From where did Monet paint Waterloo Bridge?
Monet painted this series from the windows of the Savoy Hotel in London between 1899 and 1901, then reworked the canvases in Giverny until 1904, capturing the bridge in all the atmospheres of the Thames.
