History of the Artwork

The Promenade, or Woman with a Parasol, is one of Claude Monet’s most famous and joyful paintings. Painted in 1875, it depicts his wife Camille and their son Jean on a sunny hillside, the parasol tilted against the wind. The sky occupies two-thirds of the canvas, streaked with fast-moving clouds. Everything is movement, light, freshness. Housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, it is a masterpiece of Impressionism.
