History of the artwork

The Rouen Cathedrals series is one of the masterpieces of Monet's career. Between 1892 and 1894, he painted the facade of Rouen's Gothic cathedral at different times of day, showing how light radically alters the perception of stone. This 1894 canvas reveals the pinks and golds of the setting sun on the facade, dissolving forms into a vibration of pure color. It is housed at the National Gallery in Washington.
