Story of the artwork

Garden with Sunflowers is one of Gustav Klimt's most exuberant landscapes. Painted around 1906, it depicts the garden of Klimt's villa in Unterach, overgrown with blooming sunflowers. Far from the allegorical portraits of his Golden Period, Klimt adopted an almost decorative approach here: the flowers form a covering motif that occupies the entire space, without traditional perspective. The painting resembles a dense and vibrant plant embroidery. Held at the Belvedere in Vienna.
