"A skull with pure lines, drawn with the precision of a symbol. Not macabre - serene. Julie de Graag reduces one of the most loaded symbols in art history to its essence."

Context of the work

Julie de Graag (1877-1924) is a Dutch printmaker rediscovered for the modernity of her line. Memento Mori, literally "remember that you will die," has been one of the great themes of Western art since the Renaissance.

Here, de Graag does it with a graphic sobriety that disarms: her skull is not a threat, it is an invitation to live fully.

What does "Memento Mori" mean and why is this theme so present in art?

"Memento Mori" means "remember that you will die" - one of the great themes of Western art since the Renaissance (Flemish vanitas, Cézanne's skulls). Julie de Graag (1877-1924) treats it here as an invitation to live fully rather than a threat.

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. Colors keep their depth, as on the page of a book.

It is FSC certified, so it comes from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a piece is not the same as seeing it once. It stays there, you find it again in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.
