History of the Work

Auguste Renoir painted Bal du moulin de la Galette in 1876, at a guinguette in Montmartre where people danced on Sundays. He set up his easel on site for several months and had his friends pose, rather than professional models.

What is striking is the treatment of light: the bright patches scattered across faces and clothes are the sun filtered through foliage, painted as such. Critics at the time saw them as mold spots. The work is preserved at the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris.
