About the Artwork
Vincent van Gogh painted Almond Blossom in February 1890, in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, to celebrate the birth of his nephew Vincent Willem, son of his brother Theo. It was a gift, intended to be hung above the child's bed.
The framing, which removes the ground and horizon to show only the branches against the sky, comes directly from the Japanese prints the painter collected. The almond tree, the first tree to bloom in Provence, becomes a symbol of new life. The artwork is preserved at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
