History of the artwork

Henri Matisse painted The Dance in 1910 for the Moscow collector Sergei Shchukin, who commissioned a staircase decoration from him. Five nude figures form a round dance on a hill, reduced to three colors: the red of the bodies, the blue of the sky, the green of the earth.

The left hand of the group does not manage to close: this break, often commented on, puts the round dance in tension instead of closing it. The work is kept at the Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg.

Why does Matisse's The Dance have only three colors?

Henri Matisse reduced The Dance (1910) to the red of the bodies, the blue of the sky, and the green of the hill to focus the work on movement and rhythm, without descriptive detail. The painting, commissioned by collector Sergei Shchukin, is preserved at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
