The Albatross, Correspondences & Invitation to the Voyage: a set of 3 baudelaire poetry wall art prints, 20x28 in (50x70 cm), three poems from Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil, to hang side by side, just like on our collection banner.

The three prints in this set

The Albatross: "The Albatross" opens the Spleen and Ideal section of Les Fleurs du Mal in the 1861 edition. Baudelaire recounts a scene he witnessed during his trip to Mauritius in 1841: sailors capture an albatross for entertainment, and the bird, sovereign in the sky, becomes grotesque once it's on the deck.

Correspondences: Published in Les Fleurs du Mal in 1857, this sonnet is considered the manifesto of French symbolism. Baudelaire theorizes in it the correspondence between the senses – perfumes, colors, and sounds respond to each other – announcing all the symbolist poetry that would follow, from Verlaine to Mallarmé.

Invitation to the Voyage: This work benefits from high-end printing on 170 gsm matte paper. The selected paper comes from sustainably managed forests, thus guaranteeing deep respect for ecological criteria.

Hung side by side, the three prints read as a single piece on the wall.

How much wall space does a 20x28 triptych need?

Three 20-inch-wide prints hung 2 to 3 inches apart cover about 5.5 feet of wall: the width of a sofa or a queen headboard.

Is the set framed?

No: the three prints ship unframed, rolled and protected. 20x28 in (50x70 cm) is a standard size found in most frame shops.

A gift idea

For Christmas, a housewarming or a birthday: a whole wall dressed at once, for less than the three prints bought one by one.

Beautiful words deserve beautiful paper

These verses are set to be hung: a chosen typeface, measured margins, white space worked around the text. It is this layout that makes you want to read them again.

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. You read it the way you read a book.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a poem is not the same as reading it once. The text stays there, you catch two lines in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.

There is a quiet pleasure in living with French literature in the original. The poem keeps the language it was written in, and with it the sound the writer chose, which no translation quite carries over. On an English-speaking wall it stops being decoration and becomes something with a little cachet: a piece of France you can read on your way past, every morning.
