Symbolism and origin of the card

This card is taken from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, published in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most reproduced and studied tarot deck in the world: each card tells a complete scene (unlike the Tarot de Marseille, which is more symbolic and abstract on the minor arcana), which has made it the visual reference for modern tarot reading worldwide.

Also called The Pope in the Tarot de Marseille, it represents institutions, teaching, intergenerational transmission. A card of chosen conformity, not endured: one adheres to a structure because it makes sense.
