Symbolism and origin of the card

This card is taken from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, published in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most reproduced and studied tarot deck in the world: each card tells a complete scene (unlike the Tarot de Marseille, which is more symbolic and abstract for the minor arcana), which has made it the visual reference for modern tarot reading worldwide.

The infinity symbol (lemniscate) floats above his head: mastery, will, and action. The Magician has all the tools at his disposal (cup, sword, wand, pentacle); it is up to him to wield them. It is the card of initiative, of talent put into action.
