Symbolism and origin of the card

This card is taken from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, published in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most reproduced and studied tarot deck in the world: each card tells a complete story (unlike the Tarot de Marseille, which is more symbolic and abstract in its Minor Arcana), which has made it the visual reference for modern tarot reading worldwide.
