Symbolism and origin of the card

This card is taken from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, published in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most reproduced and studied tarot deck in the world: each card tells a complete scene (unlike the Tarot de Marseille, which is more symbolic and abstract on the minor arcana), which has made it the visual reference for modern tarot reading worldwide.

Rarely literal, this card speaks of the end of a cycle and radical transformation: something must end for something else to begin. The white rose promises renewal, not an absolute end.
