"A chained couple stands before a horned, half-man, half-goat creature. On closer inspection, the chains around their necks are loose: they could remove them."

Symbolism and Origin of the Card

This card is taken from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, published in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most reproduced and studied tarot deck in the world: each card tells a complete scene (unlike the Tarot de Marseille, which is more symbolic and abstract for the minor arcana), making it the visual reference for modern tarot reading worldwide.

The Devil represents the self-imposed attachments and dependencies: fear, habit, excess, the illusion of having no choice. A card that confronts to liberate, not to condemn.

What does The Devil card mean in tarot?

The Devil symbolizes attachments, dependencies, or illusions that limit true freedom. The chains it shows are deliberately loose: they serve as a reminder that liberation is still possible.

Which format should I choose for this Devil arcana poster?

This Devil arcana poster is available in 30 x 40 cm, 40 x 50 cm, and 50 x 70 cm. The 30 x 40 cm is suitable for a hallway, office, or gallery wall; the 50 x 70 cm stands alone above a sofa or bed. The frame is not included; the formats are standard and can be found commercially.

Gift idea for enthusiasts of esotericism and strong symbolism.

Beautiful images deserve beautiful paper

The paper is an uncoated matte 170 gsm. Its surface stays slightly fibrous, the ink sinks in, the light spreads across it. Colors keep their depth, as on the page of a book.

It is eco-friendly paper from sustainably managed forests, and printed as close to you as possible to shorten transport.

Hanging a piece is not the same as seeing it once. It stays there, you find it again in passing, and the day pauses for a second. It is a moment you give yourself, and offer to those who live with you.
