Context of the work

Written in Rome, where du Bellay languished far from his native Anjou, this sonnet from Les Regrets (1558) compares the poet's nostalgia to that of Ulysses, who dreams of returning to Ithaca. A foundational text on exile and attachment to one's homeland, still quoted today.
