What is an Apollinaire calligram?

A calligram is a poem whose words are arranged to draw its subject. Guillaume Apollinaire made it a genre of its own: rain falls in slanting lines, a dove spreads wings of words. This calligram print prints it in black on cream paper.

Where does this calligram come from?

It belongs to Calligrammes, the collection Apollinaire published in 1918, in the section "Étendards" devoted to poems written during the war.

What does the poem say?

The carnation speaks of a law of scents that will one day rule our minds more subtly than sounds; the mandolin evokes reason and the body. A poem about the senses, written in the middle of the war.

Which size should I choose?
