Context of the work

This ink painting on silk is the work of Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889), one of the most original and unclassifiable Japanese painters of the Meiji era, known as the demon painter (Kyōsai literally means "mad about painting").

His depictions of animals, particularly cats and frogs, are among the most famous of his work. Kyōsai captures movement with a vividness that anticipates modern art.
