About the Work

Ohara Koson (1877-1945) is one of the masters of kacho-e, the Japanese painting of birds and flowers. This carp print, made around 1910, illustrates his ability to capture movement and life with remarkable economy of means. The carp swim in a dark space, their golden and orange scales creating a striking contrast. The diagonal composition gives an impression of contained dynamism. A classic Japanese woodblock print, heir to the ukiyo-e tradition.
