Context of the artwork

This print is signed Hiroaki Takahashi (1871-1945), also known as Shotei, one of the great representatives of the shin-hanga movement. Where Hokusai depicted Fuji in its monumental and dramatic character, Takahashi offers a serene, luminous, almost photographic vision of it.

Mount Fuji (Fujisan) is the sacred mountain of Japan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This view from Lake Yamanaka, one of the five Fuji lakes, is one of the most serene and beloved compositions of the genre.
