Context of the work

This print is taken from the series Shokoku Taki Meguri (A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), published around 1833. Hokusai, one of the absolute masters of ukiyo-e, showcases his genius for dynamic composition here.

Hokusai is the most renowned Japanese artist in the world, notably thanks to The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The Yoshino Waterfall, in Nara Prefecture, is one of the most beautiful in the series.
