History of the artwork

Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) is considered the greatest botanical illustrator in history. Born in Germany, he collaborated with the greatest naturalists of his time, including Linnaeus, and his plates are now works of art in their own right. This illustration of the Virginia juniper, dated 1748, combines scientific rigor - every detail of the branch, berries, and needles is precisely rendered - with timeless graphic elegance on a cream background.
