History of the artwork

Roses is one of the last works Vincent van Gogh painted at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the spring of 1890, just before he was released. These white roses on a tender green background are astonishingly delicate, as if Van Gogh found serenity in the study of the flower. The brushwork is precise, the petals carefully modeled. A luminous and soothing work, contrary to his tormented landscapes. Preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

When did Van Gogh paint Roses?

Van Gogh painted this canvas in the spring of 1890, just before leaving the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence where he was interned, with a rare delicacy and serenity for this period of his life.
