Context of the work

This plate XLIII comes from Examples of Chinese Ornament, published by Owen Jones (1809-1874) in 1867, eleven years after his famous Grammar of Ornament. Jones reproduced in chromolithography Chinese objects from the South Kensington Museum, today the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and other collections.

An architect and design theorist, Jones also devised the colors and interior decoration of the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Where does this Chinese pattern come from?

From a gourd-shaped painted porcelain vase. Owen Jones chose it as an example of the continuous-stem principle: a single stem runs across the whole surface and carries every flower without ever breaking. That is what gives the pattern its movement.

Which size should I choose for this reproduction?
