History of the Artwork
Flowers in a Vase is one of the many floral still lifes that Odilon Redon created in the latter period of his life, after 1900, when he abandoned his Symbolist blacks for an explosion of color. This bouquet - roses, anemones, wildflowers - in a simple vase is treated like a visual poem: the colors vibrate, respond to each other, creating an almost musical harmony. Redon stated that he wanted to put "the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible."

After 1900, Odilon Redon left behind the Symbolist blacks of his youth for an explosion of color, as in this bouquet where he stated he wanted to put "the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible."
