Childe Hassam (1859-1935), trained in Paris where he discovered Monet and Pissarro, is the quintessential American Impressionist painter. The Island Garden (1892) depicts the garden of poetess Celia Thaxter on Appledore Island, a place of pilgrimage for artists of the time.
