Julie de Graag (1877-1924) is an unjustly overlooked Dutch illustrator and engraver, rediscovered in recent years for the astonishing modernity of her lines. Her wood engravings of animals, created in the 1910s, anticipate Art Deco.

Her cats are among her most beloved works: captured in everyday poses, they combine naturalistic precision with a keen graphic sense.
