History of the artwork

Gottfried Mind (1768-1814) was a Bernese artist nicknamed "the Raphael of cats" for his tender and precise depictions of felines. This 1812 artwork perfectly illustrates his gift: the cat is rendered with delicate naturalism, every hair of its coat carefully drawn, the expression in its eyes remarkably psychologically accurate. Mind, who suffered from developmental disorders, had an intimate relationship with cats and depicted them better than anyone else in his time.
