Context of the artwork

Edwin Blashfield (1848-1936) was one of the great American painters of the Gilded Age, specializing in allegorical and mural paintings. Trained in Paris, he then decorated the most prestigious buildings in the United States, including the dome of the Library of Congress.

Spring Scattering Stars is part of the long tradition of allegories of the seasons, carried since antiquity by Botticelli and then taken up by 19th-century academicians.
