Story of the Work

Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) is one of the most joyful and colorful French painters of the 20th century. This bird motif, created around 1920, demonstrates his art of fabric and textile decoration as much as his painting – Dufy worked with the couturier Paul Poiret and the silk manufacturers of Lyon. The stylized birds, drawn with a vivid line on an intense blue background, create a decorative motif of natural elegance, between Fauvism and Art Deco.

This motif from around 1920 reflects Dufy's (1877-1953) activity in textile decoration, carried out in parallel with his painting alongside couturier Paul Poiret and the Lyon silk manufacturers, combining Fauvism and Art Deco.
