History of the Artwork

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) is one of the masters of Neo-Impressionism alongside Seurat and Signac. The Pink Cloud, painted around 1896, perfectly illustrates his divisionist technique and audacious palette: small touches of pure color – pink, blue, green, orange – combine to create a Mediterranean landscape of extraordinary luminosity. The pink cloud in the center radiates color, creating a chromatic harmony of great sophistication. Matisse was directly inspired by Cross in developing Fauvism.

Matisse was directly inspired by the divisionist technique and audacious palette of Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910), visible in The Pink Cloud (circa 1896), to develop the Fauvist movement a few years later.
