About the Artwork

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) is one of the masters of Neo-Impressionism alongside Seurat and Signac. The Pink Cloud, painted around 1896, perfectly illustrates his Divisionist technique and bold palette: small touches of pure color - pink, blue, green, orange - combine to create a Mediterranean landscape of extraordinary luminosity. The pink cloud in the center radiates color, creating a chromatic harmony of great sophistication. Matisse was directly inspired by Cross to develop Fauvism.

Matisse was directly inspired by the Divisionist technique and bold palette of Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910), visible in The Pink Cloud (circa 1896), to develop the Fauvist movement a few years later.
