Context of the work

Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) is the founding figure of photography as a major art form in the United States. His New York gallery 291 was the first space to exhibit Picasso, Matisse, and Rodin in America. He was also the husband and portraitist of painter Georgia O'Keeffe.

The series New York from the Shelton, created from the upper floors of the Shelton Hotel where he lived with O'Keeffe starting in 1925, treats skyscrapers not as monuments to be documented, but as pure forms.
