About the Artwork

Simon Denis (1755-1813) was a Belgian landscape painter based in Rome, specializing in open-air sky studies. This 1786 artwork is a remarkable example of this genre: Denis painted the Roman clouds directly, on location, with a freedom and speed that anticipate Romanticism and even Impressionism. The sky occupies the entire composition, the white and grey clouds against a deep blue background creating a striking effect of depth and movement. An artwork ahead of its time.
