History of the Work

Simon Denis (1755-1813) was a Belgian landscape painter based in Rome, specializing in open-air sky studies. This 1786 work is a remarkable example of this genre: Denis painted the Roman clouds directly, from life, with a freedom and rapidity that anticipate Romanticism and even Impressionism. The sky occupies the entire composition, the white and gray clouds against a deep blue background creating a striking effect of depth and movement. A work ahead of its time.
