About the artwork

Theodore Wores (1859-1939) was an American painter fascinated by Asia. After stays in Japan, China, and Hawaii, he developed a style combining Japanese sensibility with Western Impressionist technique. This lotus painting, created around 1885, is a perfect illustration of this: the sacred flower emerges from the dark water with a soft, pure light, treated with the precision of a botanist and the sensitivity of a poet. The lotus – a symbol of purity and awakening in Asian traditions – is rendered here in all its grace.
