Story of the artwork

Willows is a canvas by Claude Monet painted around 1885, during his period in Giverny. The weeping willows, a recurring motif in his work, are depicted here as a curtain of golden greenery against a backdrop of sky and water. The composition is almost abstract: the drooping branches create vertical lines that punctuate the canvas, and Monet is more interested in color and light than in drawing. A meditation on nature and time. Preserved at the National Gallery of Art.
