Story of the artwork

In 1908, at the age of 68, Claude Monet visited Venice for the first and only time. He brought back a series of thirty-seven canvases where palaces, canals, and gondolas dissolve in a liquid and shifting light. Palazzo da Mula, painted in 1908 and housed at the National Gallery of Art, is one of the most beautiful in this series: the reflection of the palace in the water creates a symmetrical vertical composition, where reality and its reflection merge in a vibrant interplay of pink, blue, and gold.
